For finance & HR
The cost of doing this badly is higher than the cost of doing it well
Outplacement is usually framed as a wellbeing line. For the budget holder the right frame is risk reduction across three liabilities a poorly handled exit creates at once, legal, reputational, organisational. The spend is small, fixed and budgetable. What it offsets is large, variable and rising.
01Legal
Tribunal & WRC exposure
From 1 January 2027 the UK removes the unfair-dismissal compensatory cap and drops the qualifying period to six months. In Ireland, WRC awards have reached EUR 464k. Defending a single mid-level claim runs to around GBP 8,500 plus a month of senior management time.
02Reputational
The AI-washing trap
Exits are public. Deutsche Bank warns ‘AI redundancy washing’ will define 2026 and Gartner found that 56% of corporate layoffs in 2026 carry an AI label, yet an estimated 30% of those roles are predicted to be rehired by 2029, at a higher cost. Funded outplacement is the visible evidence that closes the gap between the story and the conduct.
03Organisational
The trust that breaks
Gartner found up to 80% of global companies deploying AI cut staff without the promised returns, and some are now rehiring the very people they let go. The people who stay are watching: 74% report lower productivity after a layoff, 87% no longer recommend their employer, and high performers leave first.
Break-even
One avoided claim. The programme washes its face
Outplacing a group of 20 at roughly EUR 2,000 a head costs about the same as defending a single mid-level claim that goes wrong. Prevent one and the legal line alone is paid for. Everything else, reputation protected, high performers retained, is upside.
